These pages are dedicated to the handling of metal artifacts, particularly ancient coins, suffering from corrosion and requiring careful cleaning and restoration. Metals buried in soil or marine conditions often suffer from biological corrosion. Here we set out how to identify the nature of the corrosion and the preservation steps to take. We will concentrate on advice and the tools and skills necessary to clean and restore coins and other small metal artifacts.
